Picking the right kennel

Bigger than a crate, a kennel gives your pet more space to roam when you are away. But, picking the right kennel can be a difficult task. Coming in an array of shapes, sizes and styles how can you be sure you are picking the right product for your dog? Here are some helpful tips to consider when choosing the right kennel for your pal.

Indoor, outdoor or both

The first thing you have to consider is what function your kennel will serve. Is this something to keep your dog secure when you are at work? A fence to give him boundaries in your yard? A shelter you can take on vacation? By knowing this you can easily narrow down your search to a specific type of kennel.

Size is the most important factor you need to consider when choosing a kennel. You probably won’t find a kennel that gives your dog too much room to roam, but it is very easy to find one that is too small. If you are keeping him indoors, it is recommended that a kennel be at least 1.5 times the full grown length of your pet. He should be able to lie down, stand up, turn and stretch comfortably. If you have a puppy, keep in mind that he will grow fast. Buying something that fits him now, may not fit him in a few weeks. Outdoor kennels should give your pet room to roam. Make sure he has enough space to exercise and move around freely.

Once you know how big your kennel needs to be, you need to decide how high your kennel needs to be. You need to consider how high your pup can jump and how tall he is.

If your kennel is too short, your dog may be able to climb or jump out. If you have a jumper, consider adding a SunBlock Top™ or Kennel roof to the kennel..

While the first few steps to finding the right kennel might be easy, finding one that fits your style can be a hard task. From pre-assembled to Do-It-Yourself, sturdy to collapsible, welded wire to chain link, there are a many options to consider.. By knowing the function your kennel will serve this step will be much easier. To help identify what style you like best, take a look at a few options on our site.

If you have an outdoor kennel, you need to consider weather protection. Do not kennel a dog outside in hot or cold weather without other shelter. If you do not have a shaded area in your yard or if it rains a lot, you need to consider getting a special roof for your kennel. Our SunBlock Top provides shade for your pet. The EZ Roof or Universal Roof gives adequate protection from the hot sun and inclement weather.
