Dogs are heroes, too!

By Robin Hawn, Senior Brand Manager at PetSafe

Memorial Day is a special time to reflect on the men and women who have served our country to preserve the freedoms we enjoy. These heroes, who have made a lasting impact on so many, sometimes come on four legs as well as two. War dogs have also helped save countless lives while serving as military working dogs.

Military dogs can be any breed, but the Doberman is the iconic working dog.

The Memorial at the University of Tennessee College of Veterinary Science reminds us of the dogs that have worked alongside many soldiers to win our freedom.

The War Dog Memorial at the University of Tennessee College of Veterinary Medicine is an honorable testament to the canine war contribution. Specifically, a noble Doberman Pinscher represents the hundreds of war dogs that have served in the United States military. The “Always Faithful” inscription on the plague speaks to the amazing loyalty of these animals while reminding us of the bond that humans and dogs have shared throughout history. Most of these furry heroes are Doberman Pinschers, German Shepherds, and Labrador Retrievers. Historically, war dogs served as sentries, messengers, and scouts. Today, war dogs serve in even more mission critical roles including detection and protection.

One of our associates at PetSafe, Phil, who is an Army veteran, developed a special video to tell of war dogs through photography, in a truly inspiring way. Grab a tissue, watch this video, and take a moment to honor all those that have protected our freedom.
