Top 10 indigo FAQs
Why are indigo treats blue?
The blue color of indigo treats comes from natural fruit juices and blueberries that are rich in antioxidants.Close
Will the blue color stain the carpet?
The natural color is not as vibrant and saturated as artificially colored food products, so it doesn’t have the same potential for staining. We tested indigo products to make sure they won’t stain using this process:
- A kennel was carpeted with a cream colored plush carpet.
- 5 dogs were placed in the carpeted kennel and each was given a Floss Bone.
- All 5 Floss Bones were completely consumed on the carpet.
- Upon inspection, only a few blue crumbs were visible. There was no evidence of blue spots or staining on the carpet.
Please note that when dogs have gingivitis, their gums may bleed during routine chewing on treats or toys, and blood can stain carpets. This is the same reaction you might see in your gums if you floss your teeth after not having done so in a while. If it is your dog’s first time having one of the long-lasting indigo chews or your dog’s gums bleed easily, we recommend giving your dog the treat on a non-carpeted surface.Close
How long do Floss Bones last compared to other brands of treats?
We conducted a study at an independent kennel comparing regular Greenies to our medium Floss Bones. We found that dogs love Floss Bones just as much as they love the popular Greenies, and on average the Floss Bones lasted five times longer, resulting in more mechanical cleaning of the teeth as well as more enjoyment for the dog.Close
Are Floss Bones, Triple Chews, and Dental Sticks safe for dogs to digest?
An independent study conducted by the University of Illinois studied how the formula used in Floss Bones, Triple Chews, and Dental Sticks dissolve during digestion. The study concluded that both formulas break down easily and do not pose a risk of creating blockages. Dental Sticks were found to be one of the most soluble products tested by the laboratory.Close
When my dog eats Floss Bones, his gums bleed. Is the treat too hard?
The chewy texture and rope-like surface make Floss Bones very effective in cleaning back teeth at the gum line. If a dog has some gingivitis, his gums might bleed when chewing. This does not indicate that the treat is too hard or is injuring the dog, but it does indicate that there is some inflammation or irritation in the gums. This is the same reaction you might see in your gums if you floss your teeth after not having done so in a while. With regular use of indigo Floss Bones and/or other teeth-cleaning treatments, your dog’s oral health will improve and the gums will no longer bleed when they consume the treat. Please note that blood can stain carpets. If it is a dog’s first time having one of the long-lasting indigo chews or the dog’s gums bleed easily, we recommend that the dog enjoys the treats on a non-carpeted surface.Close
How are indigo Fresh and Triple Chews based on the biometrics of canine chewing?
Biometrics of canine chewing refers to the science concerned with the accurate measurement of the characteristics of canine mouths and various chewing behaviors. Because of the wide variation in the size and shape of skulls within the canine population, understanding the varied chewing capabilities of dogs helps us to develop more effective oral care treats. Dental Sticks and Floss Bones are formulated to have different consistencies so that dogs engage different parts of the mouth in the chewing action, maximizing the mechanical cleaning action.Close
Is HMP (Hexametaphosphate) effective at cleaning teeth?
All indigo Fresh treats contain our winning ingredient, HMP (Hexametaphosphate), which has been proven to safely reduce plaque and tartar in dogs by up to 80%. In one study, a group of dogs received two HMP-coated biscuits in addition to their food and researchers observed an 80% decrease in tartar formation compared with controls.Close
What kind of meat is in Smokehouse Strips?
Smokehouse Strips are 95% real meat, with some added bonuses mixed in. Smokehouse Strips are made of 100% USA grown chicken or pork. We use only USDA-inspected and approved meat, which uses the same standards as meat made for human consumption. This meat is so fresh that we vacuum seal these treats and encourage you to refrigerate uneaten strips. This is the safest, highest quality meaty treat you can give your dog.Close
How is Smokehouse Strips meat different from meat made in China?
Unlike treats made in China, Smokehouse Strips and other American-made treats do not contain traces of radiation, antibiotics, or other harmful substances.
The meat made in China and outside the USA usually goes through the process of irradiation. Irradiation is the process by which an object is exposed to radiation. Irradiated food has caused a myriad of health problems in laboratory animals (and people in a few studies), including chromosomal damage, immune and reproductive problems, kidney damage, tumors, internal bleeding, low birth weight, and nutritional muscular dystrophy. Irradiation destroys vitamins, nutrients, and essential fatty acids, including up to 95% of vitamin A in chicken and 86% of vitamin B in oats. In some foods, irradiation can actually intensify the vitamin and nutrient loss caused by cooking.
Recently there has been a voluntary nationwide product recall of meaty dog treats such as Canyon Creek Ranch, Milo’s Kitchen, and Waggin’ Train due to residual traces of antibiotics. Many consider products that are made in China to be unsafe for dogs to consume. When you purchase treats made in China or other countries, you don’t know exactly what you are feeding your dog. With the recent jerky dog treats scare being linked to treats coming from China, it is becoming increasingly important to only use dog treats that are made here in the United States. Smokehouse Strips are made with 100% USA grown chicken and pork, and this tasty treat is manufactured at a plant here in the U.S.A.Close
How many treats come in each package?

Our dog, a 6 year old Lhasa Apso-Cavalier King Charles Spaniel, is unusual in that she is a very picky and discriminating gourmand. Too often we buy and try a new snack that she quickly turns her nose from. However, this past week I found a new product in the Pearl Harbor Hawaii Navy Exhange Pet Department, PetSafe Indigo Smokehouse Strips (Chicken). They were a bit pricey, but I hopefully took a box home, and our pup loved them. So much so I went back two days later and bought two more boxes.
