Deciding on Pet Doors

By Sarah Folmar, Brand Communications Specialist

Fall isn’t here just yet, but now is the perfect time to start preparing for the cooler weather to move in. Making sure your pets get outside to relieve themselves isn’t always a relief for you, especially when you live in a frozen tundra (at least that is what I thought I lived in during my time in Minnesota). Fall and winter weather is not always fun for you to stand around in while waiting for your pet to potty, so here are my picks for great pet doors to consider this upcoming season.

CaptureFor those of you living in the colder areas when Old Man Winter makes his debut, the Extreme Weather Door is a fantastic choice of pet door. Choose from small, medium or large to fit your pet’s size. So why is this a great choice for colder climates? Welcome to the world of the 3-flap system! The energy efficiency on this door is 3 ½ times higher than other single flap doors, so you’ll leave the weather where it belongs… outside! This is also great for the other extreme of climates, as it can keep that super warm air away from your air conditioned home.

Electronic Smart DoorHave you ever wanted a pet door but worry about the neighbor’s dog (or that creepy raccoon in the woods) entering your home? Worry no more with the PetSafe® Electronic SmartDoor™. This door comes with a SmartKey™ that unlocks it for your pet (and only your pet) to use. After your dog or cat has gone through the opening, the door will relock once it no longer detects the key. You can program up to 5 different keys to this door, so your whole family of pups and kittens will be happy!

Another awesome and innovative door is the Passport® Pet Door. Similar to the SmartDoor™, this system allows your pets access in and out of the door with a key worn on your pet’s collar. This door will allow you to customize specific entry and exit options for up to 20 different pets. With a cool LCD screen, programming is easy and convenient for any pet owner. Check out the fun video on this door here: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=qEoTsHAzMPU.

We hope you'll find the right door for your pet. A product expert can also walk you through this process M-F 8am-8pm or Saturdays 9-5, ET at 1-800-732-2677.

I would love to have and electronic pet door that would lock! We have a raccoon problem around here, and I have been hesitant to get a pet door because I don’t want other animals coming in the house. Are these easy to install in most doors? Thanks for the information!

Hi April,

Both the Electronic SmartDoor™ and Passport® Pet Door are easy to install in most standard doors. They keep out wild and stray animals and only let your pets in and out.

Our Customer Care team would be happy to answer your questions and help you with your door installation. Give us a call at 1-866-738-4379. We’re open Mon. - Fri. 8 am - 8pm and Sat. 9 am - 5pm ET.

I have a Yorkie ( less than 10 lbs) and a paneled front door (fiberglass/plastic) which plastic door would you recommend?

We have a metal outside door.  Can this doggie door be installed in a metal door?

Hi Karen,

Yes, the Extreme Weather, SmartDoor, and Passport Doors can all be installed in metal doors.

Give us a call at 1-866-738-4379 if you need help choosing or installing a pet door.

Hi Budd,

We have a Panel Pet Door Insert™ door designed to look great in a paneled door.

You can also try our small Freedom Plastic Door. The plastic frame and flap are just as durable as an aluminum door.

Give us a call at 1-866-738-4379 and our Customer Care team would be happy to walk you through all of your options.

Great Post! I especially like the winter pet door with insulated flaps. http://www.petrelocation.com/blog/pet-travel-advice/after-the-move3a-installing-a-new-pet-door-guest-post

Do you have a pet door that opens automatically?  I have an older dog that is afraid of the flap and won’t step through but if it opened electronically and stayed open long enough for him to step out, I think he would use it.

Does such a thing exist?

Hi Marti,

Sorry, we don’t have any pet doors with flaps that open all the way.

What kind of door flap has your dog used before? Some pets have a preference for hard flaps vs. soft flaps. Others prefer flaps they can see through. We have different kinds of pet doors that might work for your dog. Call Customer Care at 1-866-738-4379 and we’d be happy to help you choose the right door for your dog.
