Doctor Dogs: How Our Dogs Can Save Our Lives

By Natalie Lester, PetSafe Brand Marketing Specialist

Frenchy and Natalie

I don’t own a puppy, and that is a hard pill to swallow coming to work at PetSafe with everyone else’s pet everyday. I’m avidly searching for the perfect puppy, going back and forth between breeds. However, just because I don’t have a pet of my own doesn’t mean I don’t have several dogs that I consider family.

One is a German shorthaired pointer named Bedford, who lives in Virginia. Another is a schnoodle named Frenchy who lives about 20 minutes from me. She belongs to some of my family’s closest friends, but I love her like she’s mine. Almost four years ago, she saved one of my best friend’s lives. Really, without Frenchy, my friend may not be with me today. Watch this video to see what I mean:   http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=dkRP27ZRV-0

Stories like Frenchy and the Lawsons aren’t uncommon. They have been circulated in health news for years, and quite often in 2011. Click here or here. Or, just google “dogs detect cancer” – wait, I did it for you. Click here. Regardless, pets do more than give us unconditional love and add activity in owners’ daily lives. They may save your life.

What do you think? Could your dog be a doctor, or do they have other hidden talents? Have you ever heard a story like the Lawsons and Frenchy?
