The World According to Cooper: A Guide to Grilling with Your Pet

grilling with your pet By Stacie Greene, PetSafe Supply Chain Specialist

Stacie and Cooper can't wait to grill up some yummy suppers this summer. What are you and your pet planning?

Nothing says summertime is here like grilling something delicious and being outside in the sunshine. When I am outside grilling, Cooper is never far away from those yummy smells that permeate the air. He always knows that he will get a taste of whatever delicious something that is coming off the grill.

It is important that your furry companion has a healthy diet designed just for them, but a taste here and there won’t hurt. When I grill hamburgers, steak or chicken, Copper always gets a small piece.

Always grill the meats or vegetables like squash or zucchini with just a little oil, but no seasonings or marinates. Plain grilled meats and veggies usually will not upset your pup’s tummy as long as they get to taste small bites and are not making a meal out of whatever is coming off the grill.  Seasonings and marinates can upset their sensitive little stomachs and could trigger a case of pancreatitis in some animals. No backyard grilling adventure is worth a trip to the doggie hospital.

If you are hosting a backyard cookout for friends and family it can be a great time to have loved ones with dogs that get along well with others to bring their furry kids as well.  This will keep your pup busy entertaining his or her guests, instead of hanging by the grill waiting for something to be dropped. The canine kids can have a good time running and playing and the adults get to enjoy each other’s company without the worry of what to do with their pets.

When you have lots of pets over, make sure and have plenty of fresh water available. We all know the canine kids will surely work up a thirst.  You can even add ice to keep the water cold.  Fishing the large ice cubes out of the bowls also happens to be one of Cooper’s favorite summertime activities.

Whether you are hosting a backyard grilling party or just grilling some dinner for yourself, great memories can be made with your furry best friend. Cooper is my furry child and there is no one I would rather share a burger and a memory with. Pups love smells and flavors, so I like to let him experience some of them on occasion.

Simple plain meals shared with the one(s) you love can reduce your stress and increase your happiness.

What are you and your pet going to grill this summer?
