Fall DIY Projects to Prep Your Yard For Your Pet

man and dog playing

For many, fall is the best time to get outside. Even pets seem to have a little more zip in their step as the air gets cooler and the leaves start to change. Because of the great weather that comes with fall, it’s also the perfect time for DIY projects. And since winter is just around the corner, we've picked a couple of projects to help you and your pet deal with the frosty days to come and through the rest of the year.

Installing a Pet Fence

A safe way to let your pet enjoy more time in your yard is by installing an electronic pet fence. This is an ideal DIY project because an in-ground pet fence can be installed over the weekend, or you can choose a wireless pet fence that can be set up in just 1 to 2 hours. Regardless of which pet fence you select, the benefits compared to a traditional fence are:

  • Lower cost
  • Easy to install
  • Low maintenance
  • Won't block your view
  • Prevents escape by digging or jumping

With all these benefits, it's easy to see why pet fences have become a reliable way to keep furry friends safe in their yard.

Which Pet Fence is Right for Me: Wireless or In-ground?

The two types of pet fences are in-ground and wireless. They both have their benefits and give you a choice of features which you can read about below and get a quick overview here.

About In-Ground Pet Fences

An in-ground or underground pet fence is a perfect option for someone who wants to provide their pet with the most yard space possible. It works using a buried wire to create a custom boundary that follows the contour of the yard or any shape. Among the benefits of an in-ground pet fence is that it won't affect the appearance of your yard, and it’s also an excellent solution to cover large areas up to 25 acres. If you have more than one pet or plan to add others, you can contain as many as you want by purchasing additional receiver collars. If you have a pre-existing physical fence and your pet has become an escape artist by digging under or jumping over it, you can run an in-ground fence next to it to prevent your pets from escaping.

About Wireless Pet Fences

As you may have guessed, a wireless pet fence does not require burying any wires, and you can easily install it in just 1 to 2 hours. A wireless pet fence works by creating a circular boundary up to ¾ acre around its location. Because a wireless fence is portable, it can be a helpful solution for those who like to take their pets on vacations and camping trips (outlet required). It's also perfect for renters who can easily take it if they move. As with the in-ground pet fence, you can protect as many pets as you like by purchasing extra collars. So, it's an excellent solution for multi-pet families and provides flexibility if you plan on adding more furry family members down the road.

Give Your Pet More Freedom With a Pet Door

Another weekend DIY project you and your pet will benefit from is installing a pet door. You can see here the many types of pet doors and features offered, making it possible to find the best pet door for you and your pet.

Why Do I Need a Pet Door?

Pet doors are a big help for pets and pet parents alike. For pet parents, it frees them up from having to schedule their life around potty breaks and prevents scratching and whining at the house door. A pet door also provides the peace of mind of not worrying about leaving your buddy outside in severe cold or hot weather for too long. For pets, having their own door provides the freedom to go outside for unlimited potty breaks, play in the yard, nap in the shade or keep an eye on those sneaky squirrels.

A Pet Door That Saves Energy

While enjoying beautiful fall days, we know winter won't be far behind, and pets will still need to access the yard. A handy way to let your dog or cat out on frosty days while keeping the heat in is by installing an Extreme Weather Pet Door™. It works by providing 3 insulated flaps with a magnetic seal to block 3.5 times more thermal energy than standard pet doors, which helps prevent drafts too. And when the weather turns hot, it will keep the heat out and the cool air in!

Now that we’ve covered the benefits of these DIY projects for yourself and your pet, you’re probably ready to get started! If you have questions, it's easy to talk to or message a PetSafe® Customer Care expert who will be happy to provide answers to help you get ready to give your yard an upgrade this fall and your pet more access to fresh air and sunshine.
